PS3 Slim

Sony on Tuesday finally took the wraps off the much-rumored PS3 Slim and gave it the more affordable $299 price tag consumers have been clamoring for.

Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kaz Hirai performed the unveiling at a press conference in Cologne, Germany, preceding the opening of the Gamescom Expo. He took the stage and announced the PS3 was "getting a new model" and that, indeed, it was called the PS3 Slim.
The Slim is hitting stores September 1 in North America and Europe and will cost $299 (or for those who live in regions, 299 euros or 29,980 yen). Hirai says the device has the same features and functions as the "old" PS3 but is 33 percent smaller, 36 percent lighter, and comes with a 120GB hard drive. (See photo comparison here).

Sony says that to achieve the new form factor, the internal design architecture of the new PS3 system has been completely redesigned--"from the main semiconductors and power supply unit to the cooling mechanism."

The PS3 Slim is powered by a new 45nm version of the Cell processor, which runs at the same speed as the 60nm processor in the "old" PS3 but is smaller and more energy efficient. According to company reps, power consumption for the Slim has also been cut to two-thirds, "helping to reduce fan noise," which is important.
On the cosmetic front, this model has a textured surface finish that gives the PS3 a fresh, casual look that the company hopes will make it more appealing to a wider audience (read: casual gamers). As previously rumored, the PS3 logo has undergone a redesign and Sony's changing the PS3 brand name from "PLAYSTATION 3" to "PlayStation 3" (we've actually been calling it the PlayStation 3 for a while).

Like the 80GB and 160GB models, the 120GB PS3 Slim has built-in Wi-Fi and two USB ports (sorry, Sony didn't add IR or backwards compatibility for PS2 games). You can also upgrade/replace the hard drive without voiding the warranty, though Sony has moved the hard drive from the side of the unit to the front for "easier access." (To remove the hard drive, you simply unscrew two screws). The one feature missing from the Slim is the ability to install another operating system (i.e., Linux)--Sony is doing away with that feature.
With earlier PS3s, you could prop your unit up vertically or lay it down horizontally. Out of the box, the Slim is only designed to be used in a horizontal position, but Sony will sell a $24 stand that allows you to stand it up vertically.

In making the move to the PS3 Slim, Sony will be upgrading the firmware to 3.00 and phasing out its legacy 80GB and 160GB models, selling them for $299 and $399 respectively.

John Koller, director of hardware marketing for Sony Computer Entertainment America, says they've been able to run down inventory of older models, but he didn't have the best answer as to why someone would buy an old 80GB model over the new 120GB Slim. "Some people want a unit right away and they may like the look of the old unit," he said. "People will have their reasons for wanting one."

Most of the stuff that appears on Etsy seems to be reasonably priced, unfortunately this isn’t one of those items, as you will have to part with $3,000 to get your hands on it.

For that price I would expect it to be made from a precious metal, sadly it is made from brass and copper, and whilst we think it looks really cool, I am still unsure why it is being sold for $3,000, unless it was a typo and it should be $300.

If you have a lot of spare cash, and fancy a unique USB drive, then head on over to WillRockwell’s shop over at Etsy.

Terminator, like a lot of science fiction movies has a wide range of fans. Since there is a decent gap between the newest movie and the movies that started it all, they will also have a decent range in the ages of the fans. Well hopefully there are a few tech loving fans out there with quite a bit of extra cash to spend. Otherwise this poor Terminator T600 Skull USB Drive won’t get all that many buyers. Somehow though, I don’t think that’s going to be a huge issue.

However, there are always people out there willing to pay a few extra dollars just to get something reminding them of their favorite movie. Sadly though, you’ll have to be extra determined if you want to get your hands on one of these. Especially since there are very very few details on the product. There is no word on when it will become available or in what size. At least the price is known though. It’ll cost you 15,000 Yen or about $160.

Fujitsu new "corn laptop"

A PC made from plants?Not kidding.This laptop is made out of corn -- and no, you can't eat it if you're feeling a bit peckish. It's actually the third generation of the Biblo PC from Fujitsu, currently strutting its stuff at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
The inside is a normal PC, but the outside casing is made out of material that's 50 per cent plant-based materials, and 50 per cent regular plastics. To make it, ears of corn are processed down to corn-starch and then turned into a polymer alloy. Fujitsu claims it cuts down on carbon dioxide emissions during the manufacturing process by 15 per cent.
What's even more interesting is that Fujitsu sells the corn-based PC for the same price as a regular plastic-encased model, despite the more expensive manufacturing process. Now for the bad news: it's only available in Japan. The model pictured here is pretty full-featured, so the equivalent price is about £1,000.
Fujitsu is currently considering whether to release a corn-based PC in the US, according to the senior vice president of marketing for Fujitsu, Ryan McCormack -- which would hopefully pre-empt a move to getting it on UK shelves -- but that's still up in the air.
From an environmental perspective, the manufacturing process holds a great deal of potential, as the laptop wouldn't necessarily have to be made out of corn to achieve the same results. According to McCormack, potatoes and castor oil offer the same energy-saving benefits as corn.

Speedo Fastskin LZR Racer - The Fastest Swim Suit in the World for2008?

US Swimmers Debut in the Speedo LZR

Speedo's new swimsuit, the Fastskin LZR Racer (Laser Racer - get it?) is out there, and it is fast. The suit looks fast, and with swimmers like Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte, Leisel Jones, Park Tae-Hwan, and Kate Ziegler in them, I bet they will be the fastest swimsuit on the planet in Beijing during the 2008 Summer Olympics. To quote Michael Phelps, "when I hit the water, I feel like a rocket." And Ryan Lochte: "Putting on the suit kind of makes you feel like a super hero."
What do you think? Does the suit give swimmers an unfair advantage? Is the suit legal (FINA said it was). Is it too expensive?
What makes the suit fast? Design News reports on the suit, listing one of the improvements that aids swimmers is the use of a new low-drag, water-repellent polyurethane membrane. According to the Speedo USA Website:

Speedo used NASA to help design the suit. Yup - rocket scientists.
Lots of tests in water flumes to test passive drag (10% better than the Fastskin FSII - 2004's fast Speedo swimsuit - and 5% better than then the FS-PRO, the fastest Speedo suit from 2007.
Tests to show where the most drag occurs on a swimmer's body led to a suit designed to minimize drag in those areas.
Body scanning of 400 elite athletes to help develop an efficient suit pattern for construction.
Bonded seams, so no stitches to cause drag.
A hidden zipper - again, less drag.
LZR polyurethane panels reduce drag in some areas of the swimsuit by as much as 24% compared to other Speedo suits.
And a bigee - 5% less effort to go the same speed - a swimmer can use less energy to go a given speed, so they ought ot have more energy to go faster or hold that speed longer.

We'll see the suit in action over the coming months. It looks fast, I'm sure other suits will be out to compete with it, but the standard has been set by the Speedo Fastskin LZR Racer.
Some of the other swimsuits that will be worn at the 2008 Beijing Summer Olympic Games:

TYR has the new Tracer Rise, with "lightweight fabrications, extreme water repellency, and precision compression on key muscle groups to aid in reaction time, recovery, and stamina" to help swimmers go faster.
Arena's new suit, the R-Evolution, will be out in March.
Diana's SubmarineTF features a super-slick water-repellant fabric treatment, thermofused seams, and seals that help keep the suit in contact with the swimmer's body, preventing water from flowing between the fabric and the swimmer's skin.
In Japan, Mizuno, Asics, and Descente/Arena will have new suits for Beijing.
There is even a cross-over possibility from the world of triathlon wetsuits with the blueseventy pointzero3, at least for open water swimmers.

In many ways, the 3G S is a mirror image of the iPhone 3G; externally there's no difference. It's inside where all the changes have happened, with Apple issuing a beefed-up CPU, new internal compass, larger capacities for storage, and improved optics for its camera. More to the point, the release of the 3G S coincides with the launch of iPhone OS 3.0, a major jump from previous versions of the system software featuring highly sought after features like cut, copy, and paste, stereo Bluetooth, MMS, tethering, video recording, landscape keyboard options for more applications, and an iPhone version of Spotlight. At a glance, what Apple seems to be doing is less a reinvention of the wheel and more like retreading the wheel it's already got (and what a wheel, right?). So, do the iPhone 3G S and OS 3.0 tweak the details in just the right places, or has Apple gone and gotten lazy?
The company has supercharged the CPU of the 3G S (remember, the S is for speed), jacking up the processor numbers from 412MHz to a rumored 600MHz. Additionally, the RAM is said to have doubled from 128MB to 256MB, the phone is offered with 16GB or 32GB of storage, and Apple has swapped out the previous graphics chip for a new version -- dubbed the PowerVR SGX -- which adds support for more robust visuals via OpenGL ES 2.0. All this should mean that end users will see a noticeable difference in app speeds and loading times (Apple claims an average of 2x faster loads, though since the company has been cagey about upgrade details, it's hard to know what the real differences are).
Reviews:-
For our oft-used phone actions -- flicking through homescreens, calling up search terms in Spotlight, scrolling through long lists -- we definitely felt like the 3G S was snappier than its predecessor. It wasn't like the doors were flying off, but there was a noticeable bump in speed, particularly when it came to initial data loads (how quickly you see content pop up within an application). When it came to opening apps which pull lots of that kind of content, like Contacts, Calendar, or Messaging, we saw an even more noticeable improvement. Comparing the 3G and 3G S side-by-side yielded small but absolutely palpable differences -- the 3G S does seem to eliminate quite a few of the hangs we find maddening as we go through our day. It's not the perfect salve, but it's a start.

We're excited by the cranked up CPU, but in our experience you'll see lowered load times (though obviously not as drastic) if you take a standard 3G and do a full restore, so there is the lingering question of whether or not the jacked-up feel of the 3G S will last, or will begin to bog down after months of use and heaps of data.
The 3GS is hardly about the hardware. The biggest changes with this device really come in the form of software tweaks, and to a point, the software tweaks provided by iPhone OS 3.0. Apple really piled on the fixes and additions in its latest OS iteration (the company boasts of 1,000 new APIs for developers), and there's plenty to plow through that up until now has only been the domain of those lucky / hard working few.

Message Toaster

Poor little toaster! You would think that all it needs to do is toast bread but it looks like this does not go well with technology evolution. First we got to see the Transparent Toaster(Click on this word for more info) and now we get to see The Message Toaster delivered by Sascha Tseng. It basically adds a new feature to toast bread that I certainly did not know I needed. Although how it works is still a mistery we do know what it does and that is deliver scorch marks on your toast. You basically use a stylus to write or draw on the top of the toaster. Whatever your hand puts on “paper” there will appear on your toast. I really do not see the point to this but I am sure somebody will start using it very effectively, probably kids that will want to start to cook breakfast.............................................

G 19

It becomes obvious on first sight that Logitech took care in designing the G19 gaming keyboard. The layout of the predecessor has been - as far as the main keypad is concerned - copied. But the individual keys appear to be more matt and thus more worthy than on the G15. Furthermore you now can adjust the color of the key lighting.

Several ornaments in aluminum optics also enhance the visual appearance of the G19. The G keys on the left side blend into the overall appearance. But the primary eye catcher is the color LC display on the upper rim of the G19.

G19: Display test
The G19 display is likely to be one of the reasons for the high price of the gaming keyboard. While the predecessor had a monochrome monitor, the display of the G19 is up-to-date. A resolution of 320 x 240 pixels matches what most mobile phones deliver currently. On the screen you can monitor your hardware, read the latest news, display Teamspeak or watch Youtube videos - everything is absolutely sharp.

The Logitech software acts as an interface between the applications and the keyboard drivers. The Windows Vista technology Slideshow is supported.
With this feature you can have information displayed on your second screen, which in this case is the display of the G19. If Logitech allows homemade applications like they did on the G15 there will be lots of such programs available as soon as the G19 hits the market. At the Cebit 2009 we were told that LCD support for several games will be available, but except World of Warcraft none of the games was specified.

G19: Features tested
As it is proper for a high-end keyboard, Logitech added several special features to the G19. First of all there is the new multimedia section, which can be used to control audio and video material, on the upper right side. Furthermore there are the G keys, which can be assigned with macros via hardware or software input. There are twelve such keys each of which can be assigned with a second or third command via the M key - so all in all you have up to 36 commands at hand.

Without doubt the G19 is Logitech's forthcoming flagship and a worthy successor of the G15. As equipments, features and performance are concerned there are only minor downsides and the new display is a big plus. But time will have to tell if the priding is accepted by the customers. A recommended retail price of 180 Euros (in Germany for example) is above the threshold of pain. At the Cebit Logitech said that the keyboard will be shipped in April.

The positive aspects of the G19 are the display, the many features and the worthy design. On the negative side there is the poor price-performance ratio.

Motoming A1600

The successor to Motorola’s svelte and dated MotoMING A1200 MING PDA phone has been a long time in the making. Motorola’s original A1200 MING was a great idea, but it just never quite captured a significant following in the US - although you can still find some brand-new (albeit years-old) A1200 MING handsets in some cut-rate third-party retailer storefronts. Well, now we’re hearing that Motorola is prepping the
successor to the A1200 MING with their new MotoMING A1600 MING 2 smartphone.

The new A1600 MING 2 will sport essentially the same design philosophy of its forebear, but will be packing in the goods - 3.2 megapixel camera (with autofocus and LED flash), quad-band (850/900/1800/1900Mhz) GSM radio, WiFi, AGPS, talking dictionary (the A1200 was a hit with the Chinese set, after all), and a faster CPU. According to Enet, the new MING 2 will boast a 17.5mm-thick profile and a new Linux-based touchscreen UI. We’ve heard that the MOTOMING 2 would sport some US-friendly 3G frequencies as well, but we’ll just have to wait and see how that rumor pans out. Word on the street has it that Motorola will be launching their A1600 MOTOMING 2 in February, so the wait won’t be all too unbearable. With 3G, GPS, and WiFi, we’re certainly looking forward to getting a
MOTOMING 2 in our hands.

Every father is waiting in the wings for the day when they can automate the driving on that long car ride to the Grand Canyon, climb into the back seat and smack some sense into his behaviorally challenged kids. Doing this without having to pull over the smart car is every kid’s nightmare and every parent’s dream. A recent contest dubbed the Grand Challenge by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) demonstrates that there are still several obstacles to overcome before automated smart vehicles could become a reality.
The Grand Challenge, not unlike contests sponsored by the X-Prize Foundation, is offering cash for advancements in this field, in the hopes of developing unmanned combat vehicles in response to a 2015 congressional mandate. Although several universities and industries have demonstrated great strides while competing, it is unlikely personal transport will benefit until years of testing and field trials by the military.

Introducing the Toast

It's a general practice to write on birthday cakes using coloured cream. Well, just imagine the same writing done on your breakfast toast by a computer!
Geeks at Evil Mad Scientist have tested a toaster that can print almost anything on bread. Literally anything! That means you could leave personalised messages for your family, create unique pieces of environmentally friendly biodegradable art to sell for ridiculous profit on eBay or even use your sliced bread loaf as organic Post-its!
The CNC toaster is connected to a computer where the X and Y coordinates are fed. Rather your typical inkjet setup, the CNC print head is a hot air gun which blows hot air according to the darkness desired on the toast (depends on the print). Testers were able to print "Hello World" successfully and a rather dodgy toasted facial rendering of Ze Frank; shading proved somewhat difficult. They even tried printing on Indian Papadums and were reasonably successful.
This device may not have any commercial success but for people who thrive on inventing new things, it brings in great satisfaction and joy of creating something new. Looking forward to some writing on pizzas and pancakes as a next step.

Samsung Electronics Co. has announced that it has developed a more advanced flash memory chip that will allow increased data storage in digital products such as music players.
Samsung, the world's largest maker of computer memory chips, today unveiled a 64-gigabit NAND flash memory chip based on finer process technology using circuit elements that are 30 nanometers wide. A nanometer is one-billionth of a meter; a human hair is about 80,000 nanometers across.
''The flash memory device represents a major leap forward in the move to higher density flash storage solutions at a time of exploding demand for flash as the main storage medium in computing and digital applications,'' said a press release from Samsung.
Flash memory chips are used extensively in digital music devices, digital cameras and mobile phones. The chips can retain data even when the devices they power are turned off.

Samsung touted the development of the chip as a world first and said the new chip marks the eighth straight year that memory density has doubled and the seventh straight year that the nanometer scale has improved for NAND flash.
Using finer process technology allows more to be fit on a semiconductor chip and reduces power requirements. The company said it plans to begin production of the chip in 2009.
Last year the company announced 32-gigabit NAND flash memory chip based on 40-nanometer process technology. Production of that chip will begin next year, said Chae Su-yeon, a Samsung spokeswoman.
Currently, the bulk of Samsung's flash memory chips are produced using 50-nanometer process technology.

We often place little regard for out remote controls, that is until we lose them and go nuts trying to find them again. The idea behind the Ceramic Remote is when something is delicate, we place more value on it. Obviously since a ceramic remote would easily shatter if tossed around like a plastic one, we would be more careful.
